The National Theatre's 1965 filmed stage production of the tragedy of the Moorish Venetian General, whose fate is set about by his villanous 'friend' Iago has remained the quintessential cinematic adaptation. Laurence Olivier's performance as Othello is at once heralded as the finest portrayal put to screen and derided for the now highly controversial use of blackface makeup.
