What We Do

We believe that film can be a powerful educational tool for all ages - as well as being a valuable cultural experience in itself, watching a film can expand our experiences and understanding and helping us to explore concepts and ideas that are new or challenging to us.

The Picturehouse Education team work closely with teachers, film festivals and partner organisations to deliver a diverse and exciting year-round programme at Picturehouse cinemas across the UK. We welcome over 40,000 people each year to our screenings and events, especially curated for Nursery, Primary, Secondary and SEN/ASN Schools and for adult learners.

Schools

Film and cineliteracy have an increasingly important role to play within the National Curriculum, aiding pupils’ learning and development throughout their formal education.

From documentaries that inform students and illuminate a subject, to dramas that help them make an emotional connection to and empathise with people with different life experiences than their own, learning by viewing, discussing, and critically engaging with film is an empowering skill and one that is increasingly important for young people.

Our schools' programme is aimed at EYFS and Key Stages 1-5 (P1-7 & S1-5 in Scotland) and includes regular screenings for Children's Centres and Autism Friendly screenings. We carefully curate cross-curricular screenings and talks throughout the year and also offer low-cost 'treat' screenings in the lead up to school holidays and to celebrate the end of SATS.

Where possible, supporting teaching resources, introductions and/or post-film discussions are also provided.

Adult Audiences

At a number of our cinemas (where we have a dedicated learning space), we hold regular courses for adult learners. These cover a wide range of topics and areas of interest, from practical workshops in screenwriting and directing to film theory courses exploring subjects such as masculinity, auteur theory, psychoanalysis on film and clowing.

At several of our London cinemas, we also hold monthly film and discussion sessions under our Reminiscence banner. These screenings of classic films include an introduction and post-film discussion led by a film lecturer, and aim to provide an informal, entertaining and informative space for hardcore film fans and interested casual cinema goers alike.
