To celebrate 400 years of Shakespeare and his creative achievements, we‘re are offering a wide selection of films for all age groups.

 

We have curated a special list of films below, all based on or inspired by texts written by William Shakespeare that you can book to see at your local Picturehouse on a weekday morning (10am/10.30am) of your choice (subject to availability).

Gnomeo And Juliet (U)

Gnomeo & Juliet tells the story of two garden gnomes, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt), trying to avoid tragedy and find a happy ending to their star-crossed love affair. Matters get more complicated when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. Will their love survive?

Bill (PG)

BILL tells the story of what really happened during Shakespeare's 'Lost Years' - how hopeless lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves his family and home to follow his dream. It’s a tale of murderous kings, spies, lost loves, and a plot to blow up Queen Elizabeth!

The Lion King (U)

Based loosely on Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' The Lion King tells the story of a young lion prince, cast out of his pride by his cruel uncle. While the uncle rules with an iron paw, the prince grows up beyond the savannah, living by the philosophy: "No worries!" But when his past comes to haunt him, the young Prince must decide his fate: will he remain an outcast, or become what he needs to be?

West Side Story (PG)

Director: Robert Wise, Jerome Robbins. USA. 1961. 145 mins. 

 

Musical adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy 'Romeo and Juilet'. In New York City, two rival gangs - the Sharks and the Jets - battle for supremacy. Unbeknownst to them, a former Jet and the younger sister of the Sharks' leader fall in love. But before Tony and Maria can run away, a final "rumble" is called between the gangs. Tony and Maria's love is tested against racial differences, friends' objections and fierce gangland retribution.
