Director: Alex Holmes. UK. 2018. 97 mins.

MAIDEN tells the story of Tracy Edwards, who at 24-year became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.

In the face of rampant sexism from fellow competitors, sponsors and the press, and the challenges of navigating dangerous conditions while sailing around the world, she and her crew went on to shock the sporting world by winning two legs of the race, and Edwards became the first woman in Whitbread history to be named Yachtsman of the Year.

Before the film, Chloe Abrahams, Marketing Coordinator at Dogwoof, the UK's leading distributor of
documentary feature films, will talk about the role of distribution companies within the film industry,
the acquisition, distribution and marketing process, and discuss what makes the theatrical distribution
of documentaries different to that of other feature length films.

After the film, the director, Alex Holmes, will give a talk about their experiences entering the race

and making the film, and answer questions from students.

Alex will also give you some insight into Tracy's life after the race; she has since launched the                                                                          Maiden Factor Foundation, an organization that raises awareness and funding for girls’                                                                                     education, in part by sailing a similarly grueling course that made the vessel and its crew                                                                                 famous, with a new crew of inspirational women.

The film has been classified a 12A by the BBFC (the British Board of Film Classification) for infrequent strong language and references to sexism.
